Why is Dieting Such a Vicious Cycle?
With the summer in full swing comes new goals for everyone. With all the range of options for exciting events and accomplishments, one common goal remains for many: I'm going back on a diet. Why is that such a familiar and common goal? Because, friends, dieting can be a vicious cycle that is unsustainable. It always brings you back to the same weight you started at.
The Good News
Luckily, I have good news! With behavior changes and new habits to your current lifestyle, you can make a healthy weight sustainable.
The Building Blocks of Nutrition
First, let us take a moment to think about the important building blocks of nutrition: Carbohydrates, Protein, and Fat. Each building block has a purpose for our body.
Carbohydrates: Provides energy to fuel our bodies.
Protein: Used for growth, development and repair and maintenance of body tissues.
Fat: Provides structure to cells and cushions membranes to help prevent damage.
So, my question for you is this … why would we avoid any of these important building blocks? Some food for thought. (;
Why Have Some Diets Worked?
You may ask, “well then how come past diets that cut out specific building blocks have helped me lose weight in the past?” The simple answer is because usually you are putting your body in a calorie deficit yielding weight loss.
However, a couple months later the weight often comes back, sometimes higher than before, leaving you discouraged. The reason why is because your body needs all these building blocks, making staying away from them very difficult.
Happy Hour? Chocolate After Dinner? Really?
What if I told you, you could still have chocolate after dinner or enjoy happy hour with your friends and still be perfectly healthy? You can! You can create a calorie deficit and lose weight while still enjoying your favorite foods.
But how? The simple yet complicated answer: Through a behavior change like focusing on portion control, product substitutions, and mindful eating. I understand this is easier said then done and that is why I am here as your dietitian to motivate and support you until you succeed.
