About Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is an M Health Fairview Hospital pathway designed to help you understand the process of your upcoming surgery, with the ultimate goal of a smooth recovery.

Minnesota Women’s Care supports the ERAS program. The hospital has prepared the information below to help you best prepare for your surgery and recovery. Please read the information below by clicking on the links:

Please note the oral intake guidelines prior to surgery

  • Stop eating any solid food 8 hours prior to surgery
  • Ok to continue drinking clear liquids up to 2 hours prior to surgery
  • It is recommended that you drink 8 to 12 ounces of a carbohydrate drink (Gatorade or Powerade) in the 3 to 8 hours prior to surgery. If you have any type of diabetes, including gestational, drink 8 to 12 ounces of water instead.
  • Take nothing by mouth 2 hours prior to surgery

Also note the recommendations for showering with an antiseptic surgical soap (such as Hibiclens or Exidine) the evening before surgery, and the morning of surgery.
