pain-ovarian-cysts-2.jpgSigns and Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts You Shouldn't Ignore

by Dr. Rachel Zilles

Ovarian cysts are common and can occur in women of all ages. Many are benign (non cancer causing) but some can be potentially cancerous (malignant). While most cysts are non-harmful and do not require removal, there are signs and symptoms that are important.

Acute Symptoms

These are what are known as acute symptoms and may be associated with conditions known as ovarian torsion, hemorrhagic cyst rupture, or tubo-ovarian abscess to name a few. These conditions require prompt evaluation and treatment, which can range from pain management or antibiotics to surgery.

  • A sudden onset of moderate to severe abdominal/pelvic pain;
    sharp or dull in nature, may be one-sided
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Fever

Chronic Symptoms

These symptoms are chronic and may develop over a few days or months. They should not be ignored and should be evaluated by your provider. These are signs/symptoms that are more commonly associated with ovarian cyst growth and/or cysts with malignant potential.

  • Increasing abdominal bloating or pressure
  • Weight gain
  • Early satiety or feeling full sooner while eating

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you experience any of the above or have any further questions about ovarian cysts.
